St. Peter Port Capital Limited is an AIM listed closed-ended investment company that was launched in April 2007, with the mandate of providing funding to private companies in their last investment round before flotation. SPP raised £75m at launch and held investments in 43 companies at 30 September 2011, are reported in the most recent Interim accounts.
St Peter Port Capital offers investors access to a market that is often overlooked by larger venture capitalists or institutional investors, but which has exciting potential for growth. Whilst there are a wide range of investors who participate in this market on an ad hoc basis, there are very few specialists and the market is not especially crowded.
The key to taking advantage of opportunities in this space is access to deal flow. Networks providing deal flow take time to build up, and depend upon the investor's reputation for commerciality and timely execution. St Peter Port benefits from the excellent network and reputation of its principals (see our Key People) giving it a competitive advantage in this space.
As a measure of confidence in, and commitment to, this investment opportunity, the principals of the fund, including Shore Capital, invested a total of £10m at launch. SPP is a joint venture between Shore Capital and Broughton, a vehicle in which well-known pre-IPO investor Tim Childs is interested.
